Mount Vernon tops White Plains

January
9

Mount Vernon overcame a stellar effort from Sean Kilpatrick and beat White Plains 76-56 today.

Huge crowd turned out, including MSG television crew and ESPN radio, as well as host of big time college coaches from the region.  They watched the Knights scored the first nine points of the game and break it open with a 11-0 run in the second.

Kevin Jones had 27 points and 15 rebounds, and Sherrod Wright added 17 points.

Kilpatrick had 33 points on 13 of 24 shooting. He had 13 points in the first quarter as the Tigers hung around, 20-15. But he couldn’t do it all himself.

MV did come up big, Sharrod Wright had 15 in the first half and was called for a dumb foul with 5 seconds left in the half and then 2 quick fould in the first 2 minutes of the 2nd half putting him on the bench for way to long, He plays the whole game and I think he gets 25 plus. White Plains has no answer for Kevin Jones and big shots from guards Sean Harris (2 Threes), Jordan Lessane had about 8 and Jabari Hinds may have had 8 as well. This team is so much better if they can get 20 points from people other than Wright and Jones. James for White Plains had a horrible start and was a no show in the biggest game of the year. Yea he may have had a dozen points but he needs to play better for them to have a shot at MV. Maybe he should have saved his pre game dunk for the game, which was done right in front of the ref who held his finger up in the air signaling a technical fouls shot and never awarded it to MV to start the game. (Now tell me what was that about?)......Mayfield is a great coach, no question. But you can’t play a kid like Kilpatrick the whole game without a rest. Your not going to beat a good team with 1 player, Sean is dynamite but his teammates needs to find a way for him to sit on the bench for a few minutes. I have watched White Plains marquee players play the last few minutes of a game with no legs and their tounges dragging on the court. Give Cimino credit for the guts in sitting his best guys regardless to make sure they have something left in the end game. Fun game

THATS THE DIFFERANCE IN A GREAT COACH AND A GOOD COACH

  4. bball fan

is new ro better than white plains because they played better against moutn vernon? who is bigger height wise white plains or new ro?

  5. JB

Biggest game of the year and thats your game story? Kev I usually look forward to your game articles but this effort was about as good as Rashard James effort today. Great atmosphere at WP today Gym was packed fans were amped up wasnt the usual classic WP MV game. I think James will have a better showing next game but if Sherrod or Kev Jones doesnt get in foul trouble WP will be hard pressed to beat MV.

  6. spacecadet

It would be a great game and I think at County Center.. White Plains wins. MV was a completly different team against White Plains and Kilpatrick has proved he can play during prime time.

    JB,
I’m on deadline right now for my story in tomorrows Journal News. I always give a quick update and then come back here later at night. Don’t worry, I’ll be back.

  8. JB

No problem Kev I’ll give you a mulligan on that one. I know there’s a pulitzer coming soon,

  9. mamaroneck

another disappointing loss in double overtime. theres no doubt mamaroneck can play with these good teams, when the ball bounces our way we’ll turn some heads.

    Mamaroneck,

I was at the 2nd half of that Scarsdale-Mamaroneck game after they wouldnt let me into the White Plains gym.

Let me just say this about the game, how mamaroneck did not win completely baffles me. The Raiders ended regulation and played most of the OT’s with 3 of their starters fouled out, and another 2 or 3 players had 3 or four fouls throughout. Then, when the Raiders got to the line, they missed at least half of their foul shots.

I think it was fairly obvious that when both teams play their best, Scarsdale is the better team. Not to mention they lead for almost all of the 2nd half, and mostly by double digits before they fell apart at the end.

  11. scarsdale mamaroneck

scarsdale and mamaroneck was a great game down to the wire with evan livingston playing huge for the raiders scoring 35 points when the other 4 raider starters couldnt play in overtime. mamaroneck played with passion to come back in regulation and had plenty of chances to beat the depleted raiders. if i had to name one of the biggest factors in the game it was the reffing. and i know this is gonna get some comments but i myself have reffed before and this was just attrocious. not to ridiculous fouls on both sides that baffled everyone but simple rules like traveling seemed to be forgotten for both teams. a great game but extremely sloppy at times. and for what it means the mamaroneck coach at the end of the game went cursing at the refs saying they cost him the game

  12. mamaroneck

i agree that scarsdale probably does have the slight talent edge, but in this rivalry match up anyone can win on any given night and mamaroneck proved again today that they can certainly match up with this team… a few calls go the other way and mamaroneck comes out on top. officiating wasnt great, but it wasnt great both ways, so i felt embarassed when mamaronecks coach acted as he did after the game, but it was a close game and his emotions were probably just getting the best of him.
and i must say the pg for scarsdale absoultely went off in the overtimes, credit to him for the scarsdales victory, i dont remember anyone else scoring in the ot’s

  13. Jayden

Rashad James seemed sick, lost, or both. I see that Coach Cimmino is playing Jabarie Hinds more. He is Mt Vernon’s best point guard.

Sean Kilpatrick had a great game. If he did not come to play, this would have been really ugly. I do not think White Plains appreciated Mt Vernon coming into their court and beating them by so much on MSG. There were two very hard fouls in the 4th, with Sherrod Wright getting hooked around the neck on one play. No Flaggrant fouls were called.

Hoops Fan, New Rochelle has much better guards than White Plains. Not even close. I am not saying they will beat White Plains, but New Rochelle will eat their guards up. The question is, will Rashad James come to play, and how much will Sean Kilpatrick go off. Mt Vernon’s press killed White Plains. You can tell Mt Vernon knew White Plains would buckle under the pressure, because it came early.

Sean Kilpatrick is the real deal, so is Sherrod Wright. I saw Seaton Hall coach Bobby Gonzales at the game. I wonder if some offers are coming from him.

  14. section1leaguea

    Mamaroneck,

The reffing wasn’t great on either side, but Scarsdale had 3 starters fouled out and the other 2 had at least 3 from the start of the first OT. Meanwhile, you guys had 1 player fouled out and the 2nd most was 3 I believe. Therefore, I do not think its fair for you to say “if a few calls go the other way…” Because in order for three of their starters to foul out, including their best player by the way (Zaitz), that means a lot of calls did go your way.

Given that and the fact that Scarsdale almost did everything in its power to keep Mamaroneck in the game (50% at most from the foul line), and the Tigers still couldn’t pull out the close one, tells me that Mamaroneck is not very good.

If this game is played 10 times, I say Scarsdale wins 8 or 9 of them. Thats not me bashing Mamaroneck, they showed a lot of fight coming back, but they’re still not quite good enough talent-wise.

  15. Question

Why is the referring consistently inferior in section 1 ? Is there a reason why so many calls are wrong or missed altogether.. A few missed calls per game is acceptable at the HS level….But I have watched games this season where 20 or more calls are wrong or missed?

  16. Editman

Kevin – The Mamaroneck-Scarsdale game was another one of those ‘game of the year’ events. A day after going to triple OT against Roosevelt, Mamaroneck comes from 16 down to lose by one in double OT against Scarsdale. Scarsdale star Zaitz was held to 17 points (not bad given Mamaroneck’s lack of size) although he fouled out late in the fourth quarter. Two of Mamaroneck’s ‘big’ men Ilya Fedyanov and Jack Warner also fouled out. It was something of a battle of the point guards as Taylor Mondshein led Mamaroneck with 24 points… but Evan Livingston, who had been averaging less than 10 points a game this year had a simply unconscious effort, finishing with 35 points. He hit big shot after big shot to keep Scarsdale in the game. It was a great game marred somewhat by awful officiating. I can’t say it favored one team or the other but there were way to many bad calls and it had a real impact on the game.

  17. anticipation

    Okay,

I wasnt at the White Plains game but I heard about it from several different people. I did catch the first half of the Scarsdale-Mamk game. I think todays events (WP loss and Scarsdale win) sets the stage for a big game between the two of them this coming Friday.

With Mt. Vernon establishing itself as the best team in that league with wins over Mamaroneck, New Ro, and now White Plains, that number 2 spot is very much up for grabs between White Plains, New Ro, and Scarsdale. I think we will learn a lot in this coming week and I am really looking forward to seeing these teams play each other.

  18. Arthur

I love the way Cimmino uses his bench. He must have played 10 guys in the first quarter, and they all come off the bench with intensity. MV plays very, very well as a team.

Sean Kilpatrick was great tonight, but it was one guy vs a team.

When MV’s guard situation settles (and Hinds is incredible for a frosh) they will again be be very tough in the tournament.

  19. statesman

Were any other games played tonight???

  20. Unsure

    statesman,

Not sure about that. Seems as though Scardale over Mamaroneck and Mt Vernon over WP are the only two worthy of mention though.

south beat ramapo by 9 or so..not too exciting.

  22. Luv-in-larchmont

I was able to get into the Mt. Vernon/White Plains game yesterday. And, it was a bit of a disappointment, in that WP wasn’t ready to take on the Knights. However, it was a well played game with quality players involved. To those of you who were at the Scarsdale/Mamaroneck and thought that the officiating was atrocious or just flat out bad; makes me wonder if you take into account, how many missed shots, bad passes, bad fouls or just bad play contributed to what you call bad officiating. To those of you are now in the habit of bashing officials, let me say this, with the exception of a few Section One elite teams the product that is out there is very watered down. Not to my surprise, no poster has commented as of yet on the officiating in the Mt. Vernon/White Plains game, because those kids can play the game. As for the coach from Mamaroneck’s behavior following the game, I would hope that there is a procedure in place to discipline him, if in fact this did indeed occur. As far as other games that were played today, it is my understanding that HenHud/Peekskill, stepped up for a student who was tragically killed and a significant donation was presented to the students mother. Great job on the behalves of both schools. My prayers go out to the family of Eli “from Westchester” who passed away on Wednesday. Eli, though a somewhat of a controversial figure, always supported interscholastic sports in the metropolitan area, and always had a pleasant smile on his face when he greeted you. Thankfully, I had many an opportunity to sit with Eli at games and enjoy the game it’s athletes and it officials.

  23. Rileygirl

Amen to the Eli statement. He was at many games and I often listened to him rather than watch the game. He was a true character. To the poster that compared Cimmino to Mayfield and Seans playing time. You have to realize that without Sean on the floor, WP has little shot. They lost by a wide margin with him playing extremely well. He sits and the lead expands. Mayfield also has two state titles under his belt and if there was no MV, he’d have at least two more. Both are outstanding coaches

  24. Jayden

I also agree with the Mayfield, Kilpatrick issue. With MSG TV televising the game, there were long TV timeouts halfway through each quarter.

    Jayden

If Rashard James isnt going to show up(like yesterday) its all just a mute point. WP vs. New Ro etc. One player cant get it done vs. any good team !

  26. Jeff P.

    Statesman,

Poughkeepsie easily handled Beacon last night, 75-51. It was PK’s guards carrying the load: Tay Webb led all scorers with 22 points, while Dayvon Whitaker contributed 14 points (and two dunks). Brandon James did play, but came off the bench in relief of Antonio Williams…

Also, to the surprise of virtually no one, Peekskill beat Hen Hud, 55-31. :)

  27. UKNOWME

THE MOUNT VERNON KNIGHTS ARE A T E A M! A TEAM THAT PLAYS TOGETHER USUALLY WINS TOGETHER. IF THIS TEAMS CONTINUES TO PLAY UNSELFISHLY THEY WILL BE A FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH. BELIEVE IT OR NOT THIS YEARS TEAM IS STILL BEING TWEAKED. TRYING TO GET THE CHEMISTRY JUST RIGHT TAKES A LITTLE TIME AND WHEN IT DOES WATCH OUT BASKETBALL WORLD. THE MOUNT VERNON KNIGHTS ARE COMING!

  28. statesman

Pok vs. Peekskill II on monday… I think Peekskill wins again. However, it is difficult to beat a team twice in a season, especially the Pioneers…

  29. Been Around

Please someone with TV knowledge explain to me this. If the game is being taped for a later broadcast, why the need for tv timeouts, can’t MSG just edit the tape? It has nothing to do with anything just thought I would ask

  30. spacecadet

    Been Around

During the TV time outs, the MSG staff is on the court doing quick interviews and giving game synopsis and updates in a live atmosphere to make the final broadcast seem as real as possible.

  31. Arthur

    Arthur

Been around: Wouldnt MSG insert commercial messages in the TV timeouts? thats how they pay the bills. I dont think the network is spending time, money, and effort to make the broadcast seem “real”, whatever that means.

  32. mamaroneck

i dont really think you can credit difference in the playing ability levels of mtv/wp and mam/scars as the reason for the fouls being complained about… the reason that fouls seemed to have a been a non issue in the mt vernon game was because mt vernon was up by so much that close foul calls werent a factor
yea, sure, mt vernon and whiteplains are probably better than scarsdale and mamaroneck, but does that mean they dont commit fouls?? come on.

  33. Bob

What does the level of play have to do with competent referees? I always assumed that good refs could make the right calls officiating at CYO games or Girls games or Class AA, A or B games. One would think that the slower the game the easier it would be to see the action?......I see some very good refs and some very bad refs when watching HS games locally..I would guess that the coaches have a good idea who is good and who is not….I’m certain the refs know among themselves who they want to work with.
