Sean Kilpatrick, who is my top player in Westchester, would be wise to have all his skills, improved by Rick Pitino of Louisville. He does a good job with the New York kids.

Riley Girl –

I think we are saying the same thing in 2 different ways. The Grey transfer did not help Roberts case in recruiting top players out of Mt. Vernon any time soon.

In the interview I heard, Roberts was gracious and complimentary of Grey when he left – said he was a great kid and wished him luck.

I called into the Brandon Tierney show on ESPN Radio after Gray transferred to ask BT, who was the SJU Radio guy at the time, whether he thought Grey’s departure would hurt recruiting for Roberts at Mt Vernon. He didn’t really answer the question, he said much of what Roberts said – great kid who got the most out of what he had but he had a cieling and he hit it playing in the Big East.

I think many top recruits in NYC feel the same way you do about SJU. SJU has a trmendous basketball tradition but it’s just not what many of the top players are looking for in a school these days. I hope they turn it around because college basketball is more exciting when you have a top flight team in NYC. It’s just hard to picture them becoming a force again.

Shawn should not go to SJU ! Virtually every other school interested is a better alternative. SJU in its present state cannot compete with the like of the rest of the BIG EAST! There are many better basketball programs, academics, and campuses that will provide better education and college experience.

As far as Dexter Gray goes, SJU being in the penalty box at the time of his recruitment was a good find for them as they couldnt bring in the big ones. Dexter was just simply not a Big East player(MAAC at best). Once SJU was able to get talent to come Dexter’s playing time evaporated. Thus, prompting his exit and or academic issues(chicken and the egg syndrome). Basically a case study on “go where your ability dictates where you can play”!

As far as SJU goes…just say no!

Does anyone know if Shawn has qualified?

I don’t know if Willie Shaw ever played Varsity basketball at Tuckahoe but I believe he did. I know he transferred to Kennedy in the Bronx but he can be considered a section 1 guy. He played two seasons at SJU.

Unbiased, there were some questionable at best comments made by Norm about Dex. Which might be true, but foolish in that there is nothing positive in saying anything negative about a player whose program could be the reaon why or why not your contract gets extended.I thought that had SJU signed Kev or Syl this would save Norm, but it looks like Father Harrington might have to dip into the money bag and bring in a Gillen or a coach with established ties to the City THAT CAN COACH. Cal was begging to come, Majerus ( minus last eves disaster)probably would have, Gonzo was begging and Im sure Pecora would have as well.I love SJU and I would love to see Kilpatrick accept,S Wright wouldnt hurt either.

Well, if St. John’s continues to play the way they have over the past few years, well, if Kilpatrick does go there, he’ll be playing for a new coach because Roberts is on the way out.

In your post about Dex Gray: ‘Some believe that the way the Dex situation ended might thaw what could be a great situation for Coach Q and Norm.’

I don’t think the way it ended will thaw the relationship between MV and SJU. I think it will put that relationship into deep freeze. I’d be surprised if the Knights steered one of their players down to Jamaica any time soon.

Are you thinking of Billy Walsh..Played at Stepinac then transfered to Port Chester his Sen. year and helped them win the Sect 1 title that year..1964..Then I think went south to play in college..I thought South Carolina???
