Kilpatrick offered by St. John's

January
9

Just got a phone call letting me know that White Plains star Sean Kilpatrick was offered a scholarship by St. John’s.

According to my source, St. John’s is considered Kilpatrick’s “dream school.”

If you watched him tonight, you would have thought he could play anywhere. He scored 33 points on 13 of 24 shooting (3-7 on 3s). He was incredible.

Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez, Marist coach Matt Brady, George Washington coach Karl Hobbs, Manhattan coach Barry Rohrssen and St. John’s assistant Fred Quartlebaum were among the coaches I saw in the crowd.

Sean would be a great fit at St. Johns!!!
Sec 1 players at UConn, Florida, Syracuse,Rutgers, Providence, West Virginia, Manhattan etc…
It's about time St Johns gets a good one!
Sign him up Red Storm, he's the real deal!!!!

  2. Info

Kilpatrick had Kansas State (Frank Martin) and Missouri (Melvin Watkins)there to see him. He also has UMASS, URI, Temple, Miami, Virginia and Oregon State among others in hot pursuit. He is indeed the real deal!

  3. Rileygirl

Would love to see Kilpatrick go to Queens. Norm has a fantastic group of freshman. I dont know if he'll be around to coach them through but its a situation where Kilpatrick could see some run from the beginning.Does anyone think that if needed Sean would be able to run the 1 in the Big East (eventually)? Sean was also openly asking SJU to offer over the summer, has he gotten too big for them?

  4. Gold Ball

Shawn is very talented, I would hate to see him at St Johns. Shawn go somewhere and get the full college experience! THere are many better options!

  5. Babba Booey

SK would be a great fit at St. John's. We are losing Lawrence next year so that should open up some immediate PT for him. And though we have struggled in the early going it is pretty clear that the future of SJU basketball is extremely bright. All we need is another guard(Kilpatrick?) & a bigman(Henriquez?) to complete the puzzle. Here is what our roster could look like in '09 :

    PG – Boothe, Kilpatrick
    SG – Wright, Horne
    PF – Burrell, Evans
    SF – Kennedy, Thomas, Cavataio
    C – Coker, Henriquez

    p.s. – come to St. John's sean… U WON'T REGRET IT!!!

  6. TOMASO

NOBODY is to big for St Johns, this is New York City, close to home but a world away, The Big East, MSG home games, great tradition, excellent coach, Final Four's again!

St Johns has a great gated campus, quality dorms and off campus apartments. He would get the full college experience and help bring the Red Storm back to where they once were.

A great fit, good education, play right away!

I have seen SK play for the last 3 years, kid seems to be more suited as a 2 then a 1 especially at the next level. That being said he seems to play the game effortlessly, gets to the rim without real speed, shoots well enough from 3 that you have to play him close. The kid can flat out play. A real throwback kind of player. Unlike Rashad James who's an athletic freak and all flash although he's improved alot from last year,SK just produces game in and game out. How James took the last shot against peekskill and the ball wasnt put in Kilpatricks hand mystifies me.This coming from a MV fan so I cant wait for him to graduate and I will root for him at the next level.

I've seen Kilpatrick play for the last three years as well and I'm a huge fan of his game. I absolutely agree with whoever said he looks like he plays effortlessly. He's a very smooth player and I think he can contribute in the Big East. I haven't heard anyone mention it, but how close, if at all is Sean to White Plain's all time scoring record. I don't remember anyone at White Plains in the last 15 years or more scoring like he has despite all the great players to come through that program (Jermaine Young, the Austin brothers, etc.)

  9. Dman

I've seen Kilpatrick play real good player. In answer to hoops fan…Has anyone ever heard of Mal Graham in my opinion the best ever out of White Plains..

  10. Unbiased

Is Sean Kilpatrick the best player to ever come out of White Plains High School? Based upon the attention received from high level programs, it would seem that he is. Although, I don't go farther back than the Austin brothers at WP so I don't have the historical perspective.

  11. pico

St. John's could use the scoring.

  12. St. John’s Offers Scholarship to Combo Guard Sean Kilpatrick « the east coast bias

  13. WFCunc

    Dman,

He was a player ahead of his time and I would agree one of the best to come out of not only White Plains, but also Westchester. Went on to a succesful career at NYU when they were a strong D1 program.
Best memory of Graham was in '63 when WP went up against FDR at the County Center in the Sectional Championship game. The matchup with Wes Bialosuknia was a classic.

"WES BIALOSUKNIA (1963-67): No. 1 in career scoring avg. (23.6/game); No. 7 on all-time scoring list with 1,673 points; Only player in UConn history to average better than 20 points per game in each varsity season; Single-season scoring record holder (28.0 ppg. in 1966-67)

Got to be careful when labelling current players to be the best of all time. Most people on the boards don't remember those from the past. Good example when they talk about Ray Rice and "the best out of Newro. Check out the name George Starke, Newro '65… Columbia University (basetball also), Washington Redskins (Captain).

  14. Dman

WFCunc, Great to know that there are others who remember that era..I was also at that game with WP and FDR..Unbelievable…The other game that I remember a couple of years later was Gorton vs Westlake..Criss/Jackette/etc

  15. Buyer

Does Anyone remember the WP FDR game at county center? WP's Point guard went up against Triplets- What an effort from him.

  16. Poco

St. John's is a great school with a lot of tradition but recently section 1 players haven't fared very well there.

  17. Unbiased

    Poco –
It's a very small sample – I believe that Dexter Grey is the only Section 1 Player from this decade to attend St. John's.

  18. hoops fan

    WFCunc and Dman,
I do certainly remember Mal Graham and I definitely would consider him the best player to come out of WPHS and one of the top 10 or so best to ever come out of Westchester. My question wasn't whether Kilpatrick was the best ever at WP – it was will he be the all time scoring leader? I remember Mal Graham to be a great scorer his senior and junior years, though not necessarily scoring more than Kilpatrick – don't forget, they also played less games back then.

I do have a question for a few of you with great long term memories – someone once told me there was a guy who played at North Carolina and was drafted by the Knicks way back in the early 60's who came from White Plains. I believe the guy's name was Ken McCombs. I have no recollection whatsoever of the guy – does anyone else remember him? He didn't necessarily go to White Plains high school, but was from White Plains.

In regards to Westchester players going to St Johns – Dexter Gray is the one and only Westchester player that I ever remember playing basketball at St Johns and that goes back decades – I could be forgetting someone. In Dexter Gray's case, he was really more of a MAAC level player. He was way undersized for a PF and him getting a scholarship to St Johns probably was helped by the fact that he came from such a great high school program – college coaches think ahead. That being said, I thought Grey played pretty well in his time at SJU. Keep in mind, St Johns has a Stepinac grad, Fred Quartlebaum, as the head assistane coach and top recruiter, so there are definitely westchester ties at St Johns.

  19. WPHoops

Markus Austin is the all time leading scorer at WP at somewhere around 1300 points or so.

  20. Rileygirl

Dex did get a lot of burn at SJU. He started most of the games he played in. You also have to remember that this was at the time when Norm just took over for Jarvis , scholarships were down and the program was a mess.Dex probably should have gone to an Iona type school straight from high school, but he rode a great state chip to a Big East school. My belief in Dex going to Queens was that Norm wanted to make a pipeline from MV to Queens. Some believe that the way the Dex situation ended might thaw what could be a great situation for Coach Q and Norm.

  21. Dman

    Hoopfan..

Are you thinking of Billy Walsh..Played at Stepinac then transfered to Port Chester his Sen. year and helped them win the Sect 1 title that year..1964..Then I think went south to play in college..I thought South Carolina???

  22. hoops fan

    Rileygirl,
I completely agree with you about the Dexter Gray situation at St. Johns.

    Dman,
I do remember Walsh also, he was a great player. I thought he had a chance to play in the NBA.

  23. Unbiased

    Rileygirl –
In your post about Dex Gray: 'Some believe that the way the Dex situation ended might thaw what could be a great situation for Coach Q and Norm.'

I don't think the way it ended will thaw the relationship between MV and SJU. I think it will put that relationship into deep freeze. I'd be surprised if the Knights steered one of their players down to Jamaica any time soon.

  24. Steve

Well, if St. John's continues to play the way they have over the past few years, well, if Kilpatrick does go there, he'll be playing for a new coach because Roberts is on the way out.

  25. Rileygirl

Unbiased, there were some questionable at best comments made by Norm about Dex. Which might be true, but foolish in that there is nothing positive in saying anything negative about a player whose program could be the reaon why or why not your contract gets extended.I thought that had SJU signed Kev or Syl this would save Norm, but it looks like Father Harrington might have to dip into the money bag and bring in a Gillen or a coach with established ties to the City THAT CAN COACH. Cal was begging to come, Majerus ( minus last eves disaster)probably would have, Gonzo was begging and Im sure Pecora would have as well.I love SJU and I would love to see Kilpatrick accept,S Wright wouldnt hurt either.

  26. Poco

I don't know if Willie Shaw ever played Varsity basketball at Tuckahoe but I believe he did. I know he transferred to Kennedy in the Bronx but he can be considered a section 1 guy. He played two seasons at SJU.

  27. Gold Ball

Shawn should not go to SJU ! Virtually every other school interested is a better alternative. SJU in its present state cannot compete with the like of the rest of the BIG EAST! There are many better basketball programs, academics, and campuses that will provide better education and college experience.

As far as Dexter Gray goes, SJU being in the penalty box at the time of his recruitment was a good find for them as they couldnt bring in the big ones. Dexter was just simply not a Big East player(MAAC at best). Once SJU was able to get talent to come Dexter's playing time evaporated. Thus, prompting his exit and or academic issues(chicken and the egg syndrome). Basically a case study on "go where your ability dictates where you can play"!

As far as SJU goes…just say no!

Does anyone know if Shawn has qualified?

  28. Unbiased

    Riley Girl –

I think we are saying the same thing in 2 different ways. The Grey transfer did not help Roberts case in recruiting top players out of Mt. Vernon any time soon.

In the interview I heard, Roberts was gracious and complimentary of Grey when he left – said he was a great kid and wished him luck.

I called into the Brandon Tierney show on ESPN Radio after Gray transferred to ask BT, who was the SJU Radio guy at the time, whether he thought Grey's departure would hurt recruiting for Roberts at Mt Vernon. He didn't really answer the question, he said much of what Roberts said – great kid who got the most out of what he had but he had a cieling and he hit it playing in the Big East.

    Gold Ball –

I think many top recruits in NYC feel the same way you do about SJU. SJU has a trmendous basketball tradition but it's just not what many of the top players are looking for in a school these days. I hope they turn it around because college basketball is more exciting when you have a top flight team in NYC. It's just hard to picture them becoming a force again.

  29. hoop fan

Sean Kilpatrick, who is my top player in Westchester, would be wise to have all his skills, improved by Rick Pitino of Louisville. He does a good job with the New York kids.
