Bear trap

If it didn’t happen last night, it’s probably not going to happen. Briarcliff will not lose to a Class B team in Section 1 this season.
The Bears survived what we figured would be a hefty charge from Lincoln Hall, which was playing on its telephone booth-sized home court for the first time this season. Briarcliff trailed by as many as 12 in the fourth quarter before fouls, turnovers and smooth stroke of Alex Gulotta buried the United.
If you’re Lincoln Hall, you have to feel confident this morning. The players were well aware of what Briarcliff has done the last two seasons, and speaking with United coach Henry Taylor last week, he definitely seemed concerned. I know they’re playing on their home court, but last night’s game proves they have a glimmer of hope of beating the seemingly-unbeatable Bears.
Briarcliff needed last night, as well. It wanted to play on the road to harden itself for the postseason. Had the Bears lost, we would have made a big deal and they likely wouldn’t have. They’ve been down this block before and are mature enough to know that losses in early-Jan. aren’t season-changing.
Gulotta scored 29 points, including countless big plays in the fourth quarter. Justin Jones covered the game for The Journal News, and you can read his story here.
Other games from last night:
Irvington 71, Sleepy Hollow 63: This is where I went last night (it was my night off but I couldn’t stay away) and I was floored by the mettle Irvington showed in the final four minutes. The game was back-and-forth throughout and I believe was tied at 59-59 with under minutes left. Irvington dug in and, although Brittain Purcelle scored 30 points, it was the team’s play in the paint that was the difference. Nick Nedwick, a very good rebounder for a 6-foot guard, and Eric Romain and James Sear, took control inside in the fourth. Great all-around effort for Irvington, which hasn’t won at Sleepy Hollow in a long time. The Bulldogs are 7-2.
Pelham 66, Ardsley 56, OT: One of the best games of the night. Jack Doucette hit a 3-pointer with 5 seconds left in regulation to force overtime, where the gritty Pelicans shut out Ardsley. Lamont Stokes scored a career-high 20 points for the Panthers.
Blessed Sacrament 92, Salesian 91, OT: Probably THE game of the night. Jhared Hall scored a career-high 46 points as the Cardinals outscored Salesian 18-17 in overtime. And remember, they only played a four-minute OT. Shadayne Philbert led Salesian with 36 points, shooting 13 of 16 from the line.
Byram Hills 61, Croton-Harmon 52: Jason Mendell scored 33 points as the Bobcats broke open a close game in the fourth quarter.
Blind Brook 59, Keio 50: The Trojans pass their first true Class C team, a day after probably their toughest competition in the conference, Tuckahoe, aced its. Blind Brook was in control from the start.
Albertus Magnus 67, Hastings 52: Wow. I didn’t expect Hastings to lose like this, not in its home gym. Pat Fuchs and Ryan Sullivan each had 18 as Albertus took an eight-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
Cardinal Hayes 63, Mount St. Michael 62: It’s a loss, but it’s still a promising sign for the Mounties. Their CHSAA A title hopes are very much alive. They’re getting close.
Pleasantville 57, Valhalla 32: The Panthers are gearing up for Friday. James Dondero had 15 as their defense held an opponent to under 40 points yet again.
Eastchester 64, Rye 55: Mickey Abbatiello had 30 points, including four 3-pointers, as the Eagles survived a tough physical test.
Random thoughts: Marc Miller scored his 1,000th career point as North Salem beat Haldane. Miller had 25. … David Williams, last year’s leading scorer in the area, also topped 1,000 career points as Clark edged Bronxville by six. He had 22 in the game. … Fordham Prep lost to Spellman. … Leake & Watts rebounded from Tuesday’s crushing loss to Tuckahoe by beating Children’s Village. Dayvon Felder had 19 points and seven assists. … Pawling beat Hawthorne-CK by 12. … Yonkers beat Edgemont for its first home win in over three seasons. … Hamilton knocked Solomon Schechter by 10.

Big win by Albertus. I don’t know why everyone is so in love with Hastings. Sure their record is 7-3 or whatever but their wins have come against teams like Haldane and Children’s Village. They have played three teams that are any good and are 1-3 against “quality opponents”. As for Albertus they played a good, not great, all around game. They should not be underestimated but the real test will come on Friday when they play Pearl River at home.

Not at all surprised Magnus handled Hastings so easily. The coaching edge was worth 6-8 points.
Pat McFadden is a very good coach. His teams make adjustments during the game, and he sprinkles in a few nice set plays when he needs a bucket. I have never heard much about the Hastings coach, but they used to be b-ball power.
At this level, coaching is a bigger factor than talent.
Arthur,
I agree that Coach McFadden is a great coach. I played for him for two years and he is a great teacher of the game. He gets the most out of his teams even if they don’t have as much talent as in past years.
Many of Pat McFaddens own players don’t respect him as a coach. His son might be the only one.
If your gonna make comments on the blog please make them legit and try to know a thing or two about the game of basketball.
for someone with the name knowledge u really dont have any. every coach has kids that dont like them. do u think every player nyack has ever had liked gary gray..uhhhhh no….but was he still a great coach..yes he was and he always got the most out of his teams..so therefore your a clown and a poser and should shut ur mouth until u know wut the hell ur talking about.
Also knowledge clown,
It’s not Coach McFadden’s fault that he doesn’t worship his players and some of them cant handle not having their ass kissed 24/7 and then go crying to mommy and daddy about it(a few players come to mind when i think about it). the kids should probably just man up, shut their mouths, and play the game.
seriously, albertus lost some very close games to some pretty good class A and AA teams… i honestly think that they can be a serious contender for the class B section title
I mean its not like Briarcliff absolutly owns against class B teams.. look at last nights game. I am 100 percent sure that the Falcons have the ability to pull of the so called “upset” if Briarcliff meet Albertus in the county center
Kevin, Jozef Mustafa was the one who hit the 3 to tie it in the Pelham-Ardsley game.
And someone from Ardsley would have to agree with me, the woman ref of that crew was HORRENDOUS. She made awful calls against both teams
falcons
Its so good to have you back on the blogs(talking nonsense)
I thought after you came in 5th place in the Pearl River Tourney you were gone for good. Its amazing what 1 win(even against Hastings) can do for a blogger!
Dobbs Ferry didnt get nearly as much as they should have…wow..
falcons
First of all those “pretty good” A and AA teams that you mention are all a JOKE. In your mind they are “pretty good” because they embarassed you in those two “cyo tournaments” you played in over in Rockland. Its nice that you can creep over the bridge for a few wins against Yonkers, Hastings and Westlake.. but come on!
Now your back talking about beating Briarcliff? Please!
Try and not get embarassed again by Pearl River. “If” you make the playoffs, which is a bit of a strectch right now, The Section 1 Class B Defending Champion BEARS will be waiting! They will be in the “Home White” uniforms!
By the way, dont forget you only managed to beat Lincoln Hall(which was tied after 3Q)at home, because Taylor fouled out to start the 4Q. The atmosphere at Lincoln Hall, is trust me, a little different!
Also, its been a while since you been in the playofs or made it to the County Center, so be sure and ask for directions.
Arthur = Mrs. McFadden
knowledge = kid sitting on the bench behind coaches son
falcon alum = coach McFadden
any questions?
From now on YO will be ignored for being an idiot.
friday versus sleepy hollow is a must win game for the jackets to make themselves an sort of contender in Class B, and to stay alive in their league, which is a tough one.
Byram Hills is a very good team that should not be underrated, look at the way they gave Briarcliff a run for their money.
Bear Nation, maybe Taylor fouled out because Magnus played well enough to get him into foul trouble early? just a thought.
Byram is a good team,(class A) their offense however comes from one player which is a problem.
Hastings is just Hastings and not a contender…nuff said
The point with Taylor was Magnus’s only chance to beat Lincoln Hall is with Taylor off the floor!
You seriously need to stop spitting on Rockland basketball.
briarcliff is a tough team for most schools to compete with because of their strength and floor leader
i think the lincoln hall game was an illusion as to how good lincoln hall is
it is tough to play in that gym
the only team in that league that i see beating the bears is byram hills (who competed tough with briarcliff in their gym)
they have a scorer who can compete with most guys and a young group of guys who seem to be gettin it
that should be a good game
Yo, YO
I am not Mrs McFadden. I am a Westchester based fan who appreciates a well coached team when I see it, and Mc Fadden does a very nice job.
sounds to me like bear fans (not the players) are getting a wee bit scared seeing that their bears are not invincible. o by the way magnus would have beat lincoln hall even if taylor wasnt in foul trouble. from wut i saw at the game he wasnt even their best player when he was on the court. o and getting opposing players in foul trouble is called strategy. one in which all teams (even the mighty bears use) so now we all know how much bear nation knows about the game.
falcon alum
Bear Nation knows this much.. .500 teams that didnt even make the playoffs last year and “their fans” need to calm down and set some “realistic” goals.
1)Lincoln Hall is the only team worth talking about that you have a win against!
2)For all the teams in Rockland, Magnus fans do the most talking for the team that does the least winning!
3)Try and win two in a row before you come back on this blog talking about how great your coach is and about pulling of upsets!
4) No team is invinceible, but last I checked the Bears two lossses came against the defending CHSAA A Division Champions(which look to repeat) and one of the top 2 Class A public schools in NY state. Both of which were still contested in the 4th Q. Not 4 teams that wont get out of their own way come playoff time, half of which couldnt beat Pleasantville(which starts 3 soph’s).
Enough about Magnus! Its your fans that are giving Rockland a bad reputation!
Bear Nation,, didn’t both Taylor and Johnney foul out against you? Is that why you beat them?
let’s be real, sorry but Byram is not going to beat Briarcliff. I’m sorry to say that barring an injury to one of their big 3, I think that they’ll run the table. I just don’t think anyone matches up well. But hey, that’s why we play the games.
Dr E,
Wow, what an honor!
They fouled out with less than a minute and a half to go. But thanks for being interested. Not to start the 4thQ of a game that was tied.
Ant truth to the rumor that the shot clocks in the gym atP’Ville have been stolen? lol
Dr. E just took a big crap all over bear nation. as far as the bears running the table i would have to agree.
When Taylor fouled out the Bears were up by 9 wit 32 seconds left and Bears possesion.
Johnny fouled out with just under 2 minutes to go Bears up by 5 Gullota hits both Free throws.
Bear Nation is correct!
Its nuetral fan and Dr E that are covered in crapola!
Per Justin Jones in The Journal News: “Gulotta tied the score with 4:10 left in the fourth quarter with two free throws after a foul was committed by Lincoln Hall’s leading scorer Jamol Johnney (20 points), which put him on the bench with five fouls and took a way the team’s biggest offensive threat.”
Noew is it Bear Fan or Mr. Jones who is mistaken?
And the shot clocks are in perfect working order. We test them at least 3 or 4 times a game to make sure that they buzz after 35 seconds.
Dr E:
waaaayyyy too much time on your hands…cya Friday
See you Friday Dr. E.
Dr E
“After Johnney fouled out the United’s offense stalled and later their leading rebounder for the game, Sir Aaron Taylor (12 rebounds) fouled out with 43 seconds left. Down by nine and with Briarcliff in a double-bonus situation, Lincoln Hall coach Henry Taylor didn’t try to force the issue by playing the foul game”. -journal news reporter
The conversation revoled around Taylor vs. Magnus
To start the 4th Q and the game tied.. or 32 seconds left down by 9 pts Dr E…you make the call
Hint: it all starts with a rebound!
cya tomorrow at 7pm…glad to hear about the shot clocks..lol
good job dr E i love how u make those Briarcliff kids look silly
My statement had nothing to do with the players but rather the loose “interpretation” of game details. Was it 4:10 and tied or as you state “Johnny fouled out with just under 2 minutes to go Bears up by 5 Gullota hits both Free throws.” Much different game situations.
Dr E
Lets agree to disagree. One thing we can agree on, 20 points vs. Blindbrook !
looks like no one likes briarcliff besides briarcliff… you guys start every argument
I have to agree with falcons. Briarcliff is a great team but these blogger guys have to shut up. Just chill out and play if you are players and watch the game if your a fan. They are just high school kids.
Byram you shouldn’t talk we beat you…
And this is why we hate briarcliff bloggers. Stop acting like you own the place.
Byram’s 100% right. Continue to blog byram.
Thusday night D1 basketball final:
George Washington 49
St Louis 20
See Bear Fan it happens all over.
FYI- Imade no comments on JFK, apparently someone likes my name. JFK is a very good well coached team and at JFK it will be a close game.
Dr E,
What makes you best is your predictabilty! great point, shall we check back into the fall season in NCAA Div 1 football for all the 28-0 scores or the NFL ?
Lets make that your homework assignment…No HS game scores now…and please feel free to test the shot clocks repeatedly in the game.
Bear Fan, sorry I didn’t know that you paid attention to any other sports. I always got the feeling that you only read the Briarcliff press clippings. And I don’t understand why you selected the 28-0 score. Is that signifcant for some reason?
I know you guys beat us. I said you were a great team. I just said you got to stop talking so much.
Dr E
I, like Big Bad Bear, get all my sports info from you on this Blog. So if scoring 20 pts in a basketball game has no significance, then I guess scoring 0 in a football game doesnt have any either.
“Dr E
I, like Big Bad Bear, get all my sports info from you on this Blog.”
The smartest thing that you’ve ever said on the blog!
Dr E
Since we are on the subject smart things on this blog, maybe you in all your wisdom can help me with a question.

How could a Class B Football “Powerhouse” like P’Ville not have any players on this list?
A team does not always need stars to be good. Sometimes it’s the teamwork of good players who don’t get individual attention taht makes league champions. And I guess since we only beat Briarcliff 28-0 some people felt that we couldn’t have been that good.
Dr E
It must be my imagination but when I read your post it seemed like you were stuttering..
Especially if its a weak League!
Either it was only beating Briarcliff 28-0 or…
The fact that you only beat 3 teams with winning records
Irvington, Nanuet, and Westlake. Of which Irvington and Nanuet failed to beat anyone with a winning record. Westlake only beat 1 team with a winning record.
Maybe the pollsters arent easily fooled!
But then again Edgemont lost to Briarcliff and they had a player make it so…and Nanuet well they had a player make it as well. Just very confusing if you dont have a Phd. Where is Big Bad Bear when you need him?
Good thing you didnt have to play Rye..huh
and BigBadBear says I have too much time on my hands!
Naunuet had 2 players on the list and we beat them pretty good. How did you do against them?
see, now here it is, I am trying to stay out of it…where you sitting tonight Dr. E? I plan on getting there nice and early
The issue is How many Panthers are on the list and if you beat them pretty good then shouldnt you have players on the list?
yea Briarcliff what has ur school done that was so amazing besides have a couple of good boys basketball seasons??
“A team does not always need stars to be good. Sometimes it’s the teamwork of good players who don’t get individual attention taht makes league champions.”
Do you have reading comprehension issues?
falcons
ahem..let’s see…how about Girl’s State Soccer champs..this year…time to go see Dr. E
falcons,
Girls state soccer title, defending section bball champs, soon to be 2 in a row…State baseball tittle this decade…multiple section final apearances at mahopac, state title appearance losing to the great Mike Hart of Michigan..i say not to shabby?
excuse me, i thought this was a basketball blog.
So Bear Nation, if what you said about Magnus, “By the way, dont forget you only managed to beat Lincoln Hall(which was tied after 3Q)at home, because Taylor fouled out to start the 4Q.” and Dondero fouled out late in the 3rd, does that mean that Briarcliff didn’t beat Pleasantville last night either?
Dr. E
havent u noticed that Briarcill fans think there are no good teams but Briarcliff and they cant give any credit to any other school besides their own.
There is no crying in basketball…Many games recently have gone to OT and sometimes 3OTs to determine a winner..The only thing that matters is the “W”........Almost, could’ve, should’ve does not matter in high school basketball….Good teams need to be prepared for each and every game. The more you win , the more determined other teams become to knock you off your pedestal… After all, that is the American way!....
How about those NY Giants today….Dallas beat them twice this season, but the 3rd time is a charm!....All good HS basketball teams should take special note of what the Giants did today….Take no team for granted .
