Football update: New leagues in Class A

January
7

Athletic directors in Class A voted down a proposal by football coaches for a balanced league realignment, instead choosing to divide the conference’s 23 teams in four leagues based solely on geography.

The new leagues will look like this:

West: Nyack, Ossining, Sleepy Hollow, Tappan Zee, Pearl River, Spring Valley
South: Eastchester, Harrison, Saunders, Fox Lane, Port Chester
North: John Jay, Horace Greeley, Beacon, Lourdes, Poughkeepsie, Brewster
Central: Somers, Peekskill, Yorktown, Panas, Lakeland, Hen Hud

This is as it was told me just now. It could change, but only slightly.

The point is, the leagues are based on geography, which is the No. 1 thing the coaches didn’t want. If I were to quickly evaluate these leagues, the one thing I’d change is having Ossining and Nyack in the same league. I think they’ll be two of the top three or four teams.

Other key things to know:

— Obviously, the top two teams in each league get one of the eight playoff berths.
— By being in the league with five teams, Harrison will be allowed to play Rye in a cross-over.
— Cross-over games count for nothing.
— Ossining gets to face Sleepy Hollow, rekindling one of the area’s best rivalries.
— No word on whether Horace Greeley-Fox Lane will return, but it seems likely.

Update (1/9, 12:55 p.m.): I figured I might as well give you guys the realignment in Class AA as well, now that so many teams have moved:

West: North Rockland, Suffern, Clarkstown North, Clarkstown South, Ramapo, Mamaroneck
South: New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, White Plains, Gorton, Lincoln, Roosevelt
North: Mahopac, Carmel, John Jay-EF, Ketcham, Arlington, Scarsdale

WOW, Ossining and Sleepy Hollow are meeting up again, too bad it wasnt this year, cause Sleepy is going to be really down next year, but it is GREAT to have both teams playing again.

  2. Ricky

So JJCR is in A now? I wonder how they’ll do.

  3. sec1 fan

Sleepy is going to be not so good next year, everyone is gone.

  4. RB

what will be the top 2 teams in every league?

  5. TOMASO

I like the new Class A set up, I hope they leave it in place for a few years and get some new traditions started.

Teams usually schedule 7 regular season games, in a six team league that leaves 2 games against who? 3 games in a five team league.

Would those games be for traditional rivalries regardless of class
A vs AA, or A vs B or
    North vs South?
    West vs Central etc….?

In addition to Harrison vs Rye, I would like to see
Brewster vs Carmel, Brewster vs Mahopac, JJ vs Fox Lane, JJ vs New Ro, Somers vs JFK, Yorktown vs Mahopac.

  6. sec1 fan

    Nyack and Ossining
    Eastchester Harrison
    JJ PK
    Somers and I don’t know

  7. sectionone

what about Nanuet Pearl river will they still play?

  8. DMAN

Great leagues…I agree with Tomaso…Lets get a little creative and allow the crossovers to be rivals regardless of leagues and school size…

  9. joe b

How about a Hen Hud/Croton matchup. They play each other in basketball. Plus both teams suit up about the same amount of players. Schools are about 8 miles apart and the kids know each other. Would make for a great rivalry.

  10. Big Dog

    This alignment is fantastic.

Just for the record, some coaches wanted this geography split. The coaches vote was anything but unanimous. This is a fair split and their is a great team in each division: Somers, Ossining, JJCR and Harrison.

It also returns A LOT of rivalries:
    Lakeland Panas
    Lakeland Yorktown
    Hen Hud Peekskill
    Hen Hud Panas
    Ossining Sleepy
    Nyach Spring Valley
    Tappan Pearl River
    JJCR Greeley
    Lourdes Poughkeepsie
    Harrison Portchester.

Also, it also for great crossovers by talent and rivalry:
    Ossining Yorktown
    Fox Lane Greeley
    Rye Harrison.

    These divisions are great.

    I compliment the A.D.’s

  11. section 1 Alum

The best rivalries are almost always a by product of geography. With an extra game or two on the schedule schools can keep an opponent who will fall off their schedule.

In the long run this will be an improvement.

  12. section 1 Alum

One comment about coaches …. they have their own agenda so the fact they don’t like a geographical based realignment doesn’t mean it is a bad thing. Maybe some coaches prefer an easier schedule than the one they now face.

  13. Coach Ricci

Coaches, for the record the Class A coaches also voted in favor of this league format last week. There was another proposal made today to rank the teams and spread out the teams in balanced leagues but the original proposal of geographical leagues was approved by the Class AD’s by a majority vote.

  14. OFan

WOOOT!!! Talking about football again! Can’t wait for Sleepy versus the “O” They stood a better chance last year then they do this coming year. The “O” got a taste and are ready to take the whole thing.

  15. #1&21FAN

So how will this effect class AA

What will those leagues turn into?

  16. Tax Man

The ” O ”. I just can’t get use to that.. Bring back the indians for God sakes. The O sounds like a ride at playland.

  17. Class AA

#1&21FAN, the Section 1 Class AA League Structures are listed at Section1Recruiting.Com

  18. rocklandball

As an old time Rockland football fan I like the new league. And for my Westchester friends it also brings backs those old Westchester rivialries again, with the new league or with crossovers. (Just ask the Rye/Harrison crew how important that is!!!) Which is something that Section 1 seems to have lost recently. Having Nyack, Spring Valley, Tappan Zee, and Pearl River together in the same division brings back some rivalries/tradition. Nice to see a Rockland league in both “A” & “AA”. How about these teams crossing over with Nanuet, Ramapo, Suffern, Albertus, or Clarkstown Noth/South. It would take a brave coach from class A to put North Rockland on their schedule. I have been dreaming of a Nyack/North Rockland game for years.

  19. Class AA

rockland ball, can’t hapen this year, with the new 3 league, 6 teams per league structure, Class AA schools have a full schedule. 5 league games plus cross-overs with the other two league makes up their 7 game schedule.

  20. HVK

I think geographic alignment makes the most sense long term. The only issue with the new alignment is the North league has 3 of the 5 AA teams that came down. Also, John Jay and Greeley are further south than the entire Central league. A flip of John Jay and Greeley with Somers and Yorktown would make more geographic sense and even out the balance of the two leagues. Two AA teams in each. Thoughts?

  21. TOMASO

    HVK,
I like the idea of these leagues, but what you say makes perfect sense, Class A should definitely consider your changes.

  22. Jim

Looks great to me. Rivalries are the essence of High School football…better to play your neighbors than to get on the bus and ride for an hour and a half in order to play against someone with the same enrollment as you. Great job by all who had input into this process.

  23. CSAH

Did anyone notice that Saunders in the A and AA leagues for Football? Not a big deal but just curious.

  24. Frank G

Look for Rye to absolutely dominate Harrison next year by a good 42 points and for the Garnets to win their second straight State Title.

  25. Get A Clue

Frank G. You really are an idiot. There hasn’t been a 42 point game in the history of the Rye-Harrison game. Keep posting, and you keep looking like a bigger and bigger idiot.

  26. Where is Saunders in A & AA?

Where did you see Suanders in A & AA for Football? They are at 1049 students for the 2008-2009 school year. With the new AA cut-off at 1050, they are the largest A school in the State for football.

  27. Kevin Devaney Jr.

Sorry about that. Saunders is in Class A. They dropped below the new cutoff. Not sure how the new leagues impact them playing the other Yonkers schools.

  28. 1st and 10

With AA down to 3 divisions and less teams, it appears that every team deserving to make the playoffs will and no one will get “screwed” as in the past by coin flips. In terms of crossover games, would love to see Nyack vs. Clarkstown North. This would pit Pop Warner (Valley Cottage Indians) teammates against each other. It could have happened this past season but Castellano (to much fear) did not want to do it and the North coaches wanted too which was a shame.

  29. Hanson Bro

1st and 10, what was to fear? Castellano probably wanted a tougher game to challenge his players. Playing Clarkstown North isn’t a challenge, that program is horrible.

  30. Class AA

Kevin, Shouldn’t you have given Section1Recruiting.Com credit for posting the Class AA re-alignment? When you say “figured I might as well give you guys the realignment in Class AA as well” it seems like we couldn’t get that info anywhere else, when in fact we could. That’s kinda cheesy if you ask me. When I read articles in your paper from the AP, they are constantly citing sources where they got the information for the article.

  31. rocklandball

Nyack had a chance to schedule a tougher crossover game last season and they went with Suffern. (Which I liked beacuse of the history!). Clarkstown North (another game I would like to see!) was a much “tougher” game than Suffern based on last season. In the past they have played Ossining and Greely in their crossovers, but they were a different Nyack team then.

rye had so many ahah i heard they already ordered their rings for next years state title team.

  34. cisco from kisco

Greeley vs Fox Lane is not likely !!After the nonsense at the B-ball game no admin in there right mind woulds allow a football game.

  35. garnet10580

Frank G: Put a lid on it. You are making a fool of yourself, and by extension – the Rye football program, and that is not the way true Rye Garnet fans behave.

All-State neglected to mention in his post above that Jordan Eck of Rye is NYS Class B “Player of the Year”. Congratulations Jordan.

Thankfully the Rye/Harrison game is preserved for 2008 and beyond. Can’t wait for the Huskies to invade Rye in Fall 2008 for Game #78 in the storied rivalry.

  36. wolfhunter

  40. fan

If “Cross-over games count for nothing” then how’s does the south determine the league champs, when they have 1 less team in their division. That means there will be 2 crossovers, and 1 of them has to count. And who makes that determination??

  41. Class B

Kevin, Just got this off of http://www.section1recruiting.com

what do you think about possible non-league games??

    Section 1 Class B 2008 League Structures
    B-1* B-2*

    Byram Hills JFK
    Rye Edgemont
    Pelham Putnam Valley
    Ardsley Briarcliff
    Nanuet Dover Plains
    Irvington Pleasantville

  42. hollow man

    is hollow home VS Ossining?

  43. Mark

Great to see the NewRo-White Plains game returning. Just wondering, with Mamaroneck playing the five Rockland teams, and with Scarsdale playing the Putnam-Dutchess teams, can we expect Mamaroneck-Scarsdale as one of the crossover games? Also, any possiblity of a NewRo-Mamoroneck or NewRo-Scarsdale game?

  44. solo

why do all rye fans talk about how they r goin to kill harrison next year, when they are losing all the stars players of this state championship team, besides ramalho. When harrison is returning the best LB in section1, Justin segal, best athlete and split end claudio dellicarpini, and i think jeremy burnett will be their RB and hes better and has more potential than anything rye has to offer. their line will feature a slew of 260 pd. plus guys and a solid defensive backfield should be there. Also, there are several young freshman who went straight to varsity after n undefeated 8th grade year who should contribute this year and star in years to come. call me crazy but i think harrison is gona give em a good game come next year.
