3OT Redux

I went eight years without seeing a triple overtime game. I’ve now seen two in the span of 10 days.
Tonight’s was Roosevelt’s 74-68 win over Mamaroneck in three extra frames, a game that will go right up there with the Stepinac-Briarcliff game at the County Center on Dec. 29 as the best of the season. What luck I have.
This game was wild. Roosevelt led by 11 in the second quarter, fell behind by two on three occasions in the final four minutes of the fourth quarter, and looked finished twice in overtime — trailing by three before a Winston Graham 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds left in the first OT; and was then down by four in the second.
So many twists and turns, I was waiting for Tony Taylor to run on the court and bury a 30-footer.
Graham, the transfer from Our Saviour Lutheran, scored 21 points, including four 3-pointers. Barry Watson had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Donnie Davis added 12 points before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.
You have to give Mamaroneck credit; it played terribly in the first half but still managed to hang around. A great adjustment by coach Tyrone Carver — setting up a double-screen for point guard Taylor Mondshein against Roosevelt’s full-court press — not only helped the Tigers get the ball across halfcourt (something it struggled to do early), it keyed their comeback to force overtime.
Mamaroneck could have won this game about a dozen times. First off, it shot 5 of 10 from the line in the first half. It missed the front-end of a one-and-one with the score tied with 44.8 seconds left in regulation. And it couldn’t get the officials’ attention for a timeout with 15 seconds to go in the first OT after a made free throw, which Graham followed with the tying 3-pointer. Had they gotten the timeout, they would have set up their press and prevented Wayne Custis from pushing the ball up the court.
The second overtime was the toughest for the Tigers. A Julius Vainauskas 3-pointer with 1:40 left put them up four. Vainauskas had 10 of his 10 in the three overtimes. But a Custis 3-pointer on the ensuing possession was followed by a steal, and later a three-point play by Charlton Karipamo as Roosevelt made a six-point swing in 22 seconds.
Crazy game, one that both teams were desperate to win. Roosevelt, at 9-2, has a chance to really do some things this season. If it storms through league play as expected, it’s looking like a potential No. 2 or 3 seed in sectionals. That means Mount Vernon is on the opposite side of the bracket.
Mamaroneck is on the other side of the equation. It has seven games left against Mount Vernon, White Plains, Scarsdale and New Rochelle. The Tigers, a talented team stuck in the state’s top league, are 7-3 and every non-league win is vital for seeding.
It’s way too early to even think about that stuff, of course. If one thing is certain after tonight’s game, it’s this: if you see me walking into your gym for a game, get comfortable. We’ll be there for a while.
Be back later with thoughts on all of tonight’s action.

GOOD TO SEE SLEEPY HOLLOW ALUMNI TYRONE CARVER, TREVOR DIMMIE AND NICKY CUEVAS LEADING UP THE COACHING STAFF AT MAMARONECK, HOPEFULLY ONE DAY, YOU FELLAS WILL COME BACK HOME AND LEAD THE HOLLOW TO A GOLDEN BALL.
THEY DON’T WANT GOOD COACHES THERE! THAT’S WHY CARVER AND HIS STAFF IS AT MAMARONECK MAKING NOISE AND SLEEPY IS LOSING WITH WHO AS THEIR COACH??? BRING CARVER BACK HOME, HE’S A GREAT COACH!
Trevor Dimmie is coaching basketball at Mamaroneck? Is he coaching football there too? Talk about one of the All-Time Section 1 Greats! Were there many better RB battles than the ones he and Maldonado used to have? What did he do football wise after Hofstra, anything?
PS To HOLLOW & OLD SCHOOL FAN. If your gonna post and act like you’re two different people, at least take the Caps Lock off for one of the posts!
HANSON BRO,
SORRY TO DISAPPOINT YOU, BUT THE POST BY ” HOLLOW ” ISNT FROM MYSELF, JUST BECAUSE I TYPE IN CAPS DOESNT MEAN THAT THE OTHER CAPS ARE FROM ME AS WELL, SO IM SORRY. IF YOU LIKE TO, I CAN TYPE IN LOWER CASE, SO YOU LET ME KNOW.
REGARDS UR FIRST POST, TREVOR IS ASSISTANT COACH FOR VARSITY BBALL AT MAMARONECK. I DONT THINK THAT HE IS COACHING FOOTBALL THERE.
AFTER 4 WONDERFUL YEARS AT HOFSTRA WHERE HE SET THE ALL TIME RUSHING RECORD JUST AFTER 3 YEARS, HE WENT TO WORK IN THE SLEEPY HOLLOW SCHOOLS IF I AM NOT MISTAKEN, AND WAS COACHING FOOTBALL AT SH WHEN THEY LOST TO RYE THE FIRST TIME AROUND IN MAHOPAC.
OTHER THAN GOING TO OHIO ST. FOR A YEAR, THEN TRANSFERING TO MARYLAND, I HAVE NO CLUE TO WHAT MALDONADO IS UP TO, I KNOW THAT HE DIDNT REALLY DO ANYTHING IN COLLEGE.
THEY WERE 2 OF THE ALL TIME GREATS AND HAD GOOD BATTLES THEIR SENIOR YEAR. I WANT TO SAY THAT YEAR SECTION 1 HAD THE 2 BEST RB IN ALL OF NEW YORK STATE. SLEEPY BEAT HARRISON AT HOME FOR THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP, BUT HARRISON WOPPED THEM IN THE FINAL AT MEMORIAL FIELD IN MOUNT VERNON.
